I graduated in philosophy at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" in 1989 and I'm currently senior researcher of the CNR Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technology in Rome. I am co-founder of the Laboratory for Applied Ontology. My interests include ontology engineering, the Semantic Web, knowledge management, semiotics, and cognitive linguistics. My work on ontology engineering and conceptual modeling dates back to 1992, when pioneering the application of ontologies for terminology systems reengineering. My current research focuses on pattern-based ontology design, collaborative modeling, hybridation of NLP, lexical and semantic resources, and metamodels for heterogeneous knowledge integration. I have published more than 100 refereed articles in proceedings of international conferences, journals, and books, and have been involved in several projects funded by both the European Union and industrial companies (either as research partner or consultant). I am leading the CNR research in the EU projects NeOn and BONy and have worked in the seminal ontology-related EU projects Galen, WonderWeb, OntoWeb, Metokis, and the Eureka project IKF. I have co-organized the first Formal Ontology and Information Systems Conference FOIS 1998, the Linguistic Resources and Evaluation Conference, LREC 2006, and I am chairing the next European Knowledge Engineering and Knowledge Management Conference, EKAW 2008, as well as several workshops such as WORM at ODBASE2004 (focusing on regulatory ontologies), LEGONT at ICAIL2003 (focusing on legal ontologies), CORONT at EKAW2004 (focusing on core ontologies), and OPSW at ISWC2005 (focusing on ontology design patterns for the Semantic Web), the EON06: Ontology Evaluation for the Web Workshop at WWW2006, OntoLex: the ontology/lexicon interface at ISWC2007, and SWAP2008. I am serving in the PCs of main conferences in my field (KR, ISWC, WWW, FOIS, LREC), and give invited academic and industrial talks, courses, and tutorials, e.g. the formal ontological analysis and conceptual modelling tutorial at EKAW 2002, the Semantic Web course at Reason Park 2003, the ontology engineering, evaluation and design courses at SSSW Summer Schools, and the knowledge engineering course from 2003 to 2005 for the Strategic Design studies at the Universita' per Stranieri of Perugia. I act as reviewer for the EU-IST framework programmes and the Italian Ministries of Research and Industry.
